Creative Problem-Solving for Unique Building Challenges

Not all new or existing buildings fit neatly within the bounds of conventional building or fire code.  If compliance with a building or fire code requirement is posing challenge our team can review the specific provision to identify the feasibility of an alternative solution option, discuss the solution in concept, and prepare an alternative solution report that meets safety and compliance requirements of the Code while allowing for innovative designs and unique building concepts.

As objective based regulations, most building and fire code provisions are tied to a objective and functional statement.  Further, the National Research Council of Canada publishes intent statements that tie the objective and functional statements together to better explain the intent of what the requirement is trying to achieve.  An alternative solution is not just an equivalency report, it must demonstrate that the proposed solution will perform as well as the minimum level of performance of the Code.

RCC staff have extensive experience in successfully developing alternative solution approaches for a number of building and fire Code requirements and demonstrating to authorities having jurisdiction that the alternative solution will perform better or as intended by the Code.

The following are some alternative solutions we have successfully developed:

  • Exit Exposure Protection
  • Combustible Waste Drain and Vent Piping in a Service Shaft
  • Wavier of Smoke Dampers
  • Travel Distance to an Exit
  • Separation of Exits
  • Exceeding Building Area or Height
  • Spatial Separation
  • Pick Towers/Storage Modules/Elevated Use Platforms
  • Protection of Openings in Fire Separations
